Author’s note: This is the seventh installment of my weekly column, Barely Relevant. The sound of Van Morrison sniffing in “TB Sheets” always makes me laugh. Except it isn’t supposed to be funny. The song is about a girl dying on her deathbed, and the Van Morrison character wants to be anywhere in the world but there – with her. I knew a girl once that went and saw Van Morrison play. She said he came out onto the stage and vomited all over a woman in the front row. That made me laugh, too.
You look down at it from above, and it looks like it could be a suburb of Chicago or Baltimore. But, like anything else, you need to get low to find its particular scent. It’s probably because of my Halloween obsession that my mind retained the darker edges of boyhood there and released the rest. I couldn’t write you a story about acing a test or playing catch with my dad, but I could tell you about the winter that a 12-year-old girl got decapitated on an innertube when sliding down McGraw Hill.
