The Barbie movie was always going to include the iconic 'Barbie Girl' song by Aqua despite the band saying otherwise, reveals Margot Robbie.

The Barbie movie always planned to include Aqua's "Barbie Girl" song despite the Danish band saying otherwise. Over a year ago, Aqua told the press that their iconic 1997 song, "Barbie Girl," would not be featured in the highly-anticipated Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie. Audiences were understandably upset when they found out the match made in heaven wouldn't be happening.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Talking to Rolling Stone, Robbie revealed the Barbie movie soundtrack was always meant to include the "Barbie Girl" song, albeit a remixed version. The Barbie star says it was Gerwig's plan all along to incorporate the iconic song in the movie, especially since she and many others were begging for it.

I was like, "Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl.' It has to be in there. And [Greta] was like, "Don’t worry, we’re going to find a cool way to incorporate it." And then, when she was like, "Guess who’s going to do the remix of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.

The Barbie Movie –"Barbie Girl" Controversy Explained The dispute between Mattel, the toy company that manufactures the fashion dolls and co-produces the upcoming movie, and Aqua goes way back to 1997 when the "Barbie Girl" song first became a global hit. Mattel, concerned that the song's suggestive lyrics would turn the doll into a sex object and hurt its wholesome Barbie brand, filed a lawsuit against Aqua for trademark infringement, which resulted in a counterclaim.

Over a year ago, Aqua's lead singer Lene Nystrøm's manager Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen said their "Barbie Girl" song wouldn't be used in the movie. However, it was Gerwig's plan all along to incorporate the iconic song. It's a wise choice by the director since it's nearly impossible to imagine a big-screen adaptation of Barbie without "Barbie Girl.
