A new report reveals that Warner Bros. wants director Christopher Nolan back, even if Universal's Oppenheimer will directly compete with Barbie.
A new development in the Barbie vs. Oppenheimer box office battle has emerged. When news of Christopher Nolan's upcoming biographical movie would release on July 21, 2023, in October 2021, Warner Bros followed a few months later by announcing that their newest summer blockbuster, Barbie, would also bow out on the same date. This coincidence led to speculation on social media that this move was deliberate after Nolan ended his working relationship with Warner Bros.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Variety now reports that Warner Bros. is trying to woo back Nolan after he finishes Oppenheimer, even if his latest movie is going toe-to-toe with Barbie. According to the report, Nolan received a seven-figure royalty check from the studio to compensate for Tenet's pandemic theatrical release. Furthermore, Nolan performed post-production on the Warner Bros.
While some audience members and pundits thought this release model would be a one-off, similar to how Disney released their Mulan remake on Disney+ with Premier Access, Tenet's financial failure prompted Warner Bros. to release their entire 2021 slate both in theatres and on HBO Max. Many filmmakers, including Dune's Denis Villeneuve, expressed their discontent at this decision, which was reportedly done without consulting the directors and actors who starred in the movies.
As a result, Nolan opted to work with Universal for Oppenheimer, as the studio promised him a $100 million budget, full creative control, and, more importantly, a 100-day exclusive theatrical window. The movie is reportedly being released in IMAX theaters for at least three weeks, which recently prompted Tom Cruise to be furious at having Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One playing in IMAX for only one week.
