We chat with Barbie actor Ana Cruz Kayne discusses on-set sisterhood, the legal system in Barbie Land, working on Greta Gerwig’s latest movie, and more:
Barbie looks set to become the most successful effort in 2023’s surprisingly stacked list of toy-to-movie adaptations. What’s more, thanks to its smart marketing, much-publicized release day rivalry with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and a fantastic array of talent both in front of and behind the camera, Barbie has become one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
Ana Cruz Kayne: Well, listen, I grew up in a world where Barbie existed. I know how powerful and beautiful and universal she is. But, the creative team was enough, hands down. We hadn't seen a script before we flew out, and it was all on good faith that this was going to be an experience of a lifetime. It was sort of like, “Here I go. I've got this IP and these brilliant people.” Margot, Ryan, and America had been announced at that point, and I was sort of like, “I'm good.
It was so collaborative, and it was such a sisterhood. Even with the Kens — the Daddies, we called them — it was still a sisterhood, okay? We all lifted each other up, and I think it really comes across. I got to see a cut of it, and I was like, “Oh my god, I love all these people.” Ana Cruz Kayne: It is so pro-ladies and body sovereignty, my friend. Universal childcare, health care, and all the things that women and women-identifying — and even daddies — need. Everybody needs these things.
There was not a lot of flexibility with the lines, but I would say a lot of flexibility with the delivering of the lines, and the embodying of the Barbies. Whatever felt fun to us, she would be like, “Lean into that.” I feel like she really set a precedent of, like, “This is a loving, safe place to be as weird and as big as you want,” and I think you'll see that in our beautiful movie.
