Per Variety, the Barbie box office has finally climbed high enough to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023. The movie has now earned a staggering gross of $1.36 billion. It has toppled the previous record-holder, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned a total of $1.359 billion by the end of its worldwide theatrical run.
Can Any Other 2023 Movies Challenge Barbie for the No. 1 Spot? Barbie's box office success is truly monumental. However, the year is only two-thirds over at the time of writing. This means that, however unlikely it may seem, there is still the possibility that another upcoming 2023 movie could claim the No. 1 title before the end of the year.
It is difficult to predict exactly which blockbuster movies will remain on the schedule toward the end of the year. Amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes as actors and writers fight for fair pay, a lack of promotion from movies' stars has led many upcoming tentpoles to delay their releases. This includes Dune: Part Two, which has been moved to a March 15, 2024 release.
However, there are still movies that are currently on the schedule that could potentially give Barbie a run for its money. This includes the superhero movies Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Marvels, as well as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and the family releases Wonka and Trolls Band Together.
