Ticket pre-sales for Greta Gerwig's Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the titular doll, are the highest of the year and the best since Avatar 2.
Barbie is seeing tremendous ticket pre-sales, breaking a 2023 record. The movie, which is due in theaters on July 21, was directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. The comedy follows the iconic doll Barbie as she and Ken travel from the seemingly perfect paradise of Barbie Land to the real world on a journey of self-discovery.

Barbie presale tickets are outnumbering any other 2023 movie, including the massive hits The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
How Well Will the Barbie Movie Do At the Box Office? Barbie is already poised to become a huge success by any measure. In addition to its massive pre-sales, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score is 90 percent at the time of writing and will most likely become Certified Fresh before too long. All of this has added up to opening weekend projections that could reach $110 million at the domestic box office.
It seems that the Barbie box office has nowhere to go but up. If it reaches that $110 million total, it would have one of the Top 5 openings of the year, ahead of The Little Mermaid and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It would even near the domestic opening of Avatar: The Way of Water, which earned $134.1 million in its opening weekend.
However, Barbie most likely won't gross as much as Avatar: The Way of Water. The Barbie brand may have less appeal in overseas markets, for one thing, but Avatar also featured a large draw for premium large format screens, 3D, and IMAX showings. Those factors helped boosted Avatar toward the all-time record, which Barbie is likely not in contention for, even though it could very well become one of the highest-grossing hits of the year nonetheless.
