Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Barbie movie is being banned in two more countries, this time for "moral and religious" reasons. Released in the United States on July 21, the same day as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie has dominated the box office on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide in just three weeks.

Now, as Barbie is set to open across the Middle East, more countries are moving to ban it. According to the Associated Press, the Barbie movie has been banned in Kuwait, with the country claiming it promotes "ideas and beliefs that are alien to the Kuwaiti society and public order.

Why The Barbie Movie Is Being Banned Before the Middle Eastern countries, the Barbie movie was banned in Vietnam for reasons unrelated to its perceived sexuality or LGBTQ+ references. The film was first banned in the country because of one shot, which only appears for a split second, that features a map of the real world with what is known as the "nine-dash line.

Though it doesn't feature any overt sexuality or LGBTQ+ references, the Barbie movie being banned in Kuwait and Lebanon isn't a surprise. The countries have some of the strictest censors in the Middle East, with Talk to Me being banned in Kuwait for the mere inclusion of a trans actor. Similarly, the Barbie cast includes multiple LGBTQ+ members, including Kate McKinnon, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, and Scott Evans.
