Julie Bishop tackled the Barbie movie hype, Mattel's foreign minister doll and being a woman in politics following her address on megatrends at the National Press Club.

Mattel created a Barbie of the former foreign minister as part of their role model series in 2021, recognising her as a “woman of firsts”.

“My Barbie doll was foreign minister Barbie so it just goes to show that Barbie can be anything, including foreign minister,” she said. “Julie formalised a partnership between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Fashion Chamber to promote Australian fashion, nurture Australian fashion designers, and connect Australian fashion stylists and creators and designers with counterparts overseas,” Mattel said at the time.

Ms Bishop then looked back on her career in the Australian government spanning more than two decades.“I achieved all I wanted to achieve in politics. It would be churlish of me to say that there was a glass ceiling. I became the Minister for Foreign Affairs which is without doubt the best job in politics.”
