The prospect of a Barbie sequel receives an honest response from co-writer/director Greta Gerwig after the movie's record-breaking box office success.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Greta Gerwig provides an honest response on the potential of a Barbie sequel. Directed by Gerwig with a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, the film follows Margot Robbie's Barbie and Ryan Gosling's as they leave the utopia of Barbie Land in search of self-discovery in the real world.
In an interview with The New York Times, Gerwig was asked about the potential of Barbie 2. Overall, the director expressed uncertainty about a sequel, as she feels like she has exhausted all her creative ideas and is not currently pursuing any sequels or spinoffs. Read her full response below: At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.
Greta Gerwig Doesn't Do Sequels, & That's Ok In her short but stellar directorial career, Gerwig has never seriously pursued making a direct sequel. Her solo directorial debut Lady Bird grossed $79 million on a $10 million budget. This was enough of a success to warrant a follow-up from A24, with Gerwig even expressing interest in making three spiritual successors set in Sacramento, similar to the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante.
However, Gerwig instead decided to reimagine Louisa May Alcott's iconic novel for the screen with 2019's Little Women. The movie was an even bigger box office success that grossed $218 million on a $40 million budget. Alcott wrote two sequel novels featuring the March sisters, Little Men and Jo's Boys, which Gerwig likely could've also adapted, though she decided to make the Barbie movie instead.
