Barbie Will Win The Weekend, But Oppenheimer Is No Slouch Every early projection has given Barbie a considerable lead over Oppenheimer, and these preview results are bearing that out. There are quite a few factors that make Barbie taking No. 1 over the Nolan movie inevitable, including the fact that it is based on an established IP. Barbie is also rated PG-13, which allows it to be open to more audience members of varied ages than the R-rated Oppenheimer.
Barbie is also on a trajectory that will likely place it among the top movies of the year. In fact, a recent report showed that it sold more presale tickets than any movie in 2023, and the most since the 2022 release of the record-shattering Avatar: The Way of Water. However, despite inevitably opening at No. 2, the Oppenheimer box office is providing an excellent showing for a three-hour R-rated drama, coming out ahead of previous hits like John Wick: Chapter 4 and Nolan's own Dunkirk.
Oppenheimer is likely on its way to an opening weekend gross of $50 million. This will make it the 27th highest-grossing domestic movie of the year in just three days, outgrossing the entire domestic runs of movies such as No Hard Feelings, The Boogeyman, and Knock at the Cabin to date. Even if it's being trounced by Barbie, this is nevertheless a great result for both movies.
