Barack Obama, Serena Williams, Roger Federer are among those to congratulate Coco Gauff on her U.S. Open title

Gauff, who took home $3 million along with the trophy, credited her haters for helping to motivate her to win her first Slam after she won U.S. Open warm-up tournaments this summer in Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati.

“To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it,” Gauff said. “Now I’m really burning so bright right now.” Gauff also credited Venus and Serena Williams, who helped blaze a path for younger Black athletes like Gauff and Frances Tiafoe, who lost to fellow American Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals after reaching the semifinals a year ago.

As an 8-year-old in 2012, Gauff was dancing in the stands celebrating the year Serena captured one of her six U.S. Opens and 23 Grand Slam titles. Coco Gauff went from dancing at the US Open as an 8-year-old to winning her first career Grand Slam at the same tournament 11 years later as a 19-year-old.
