Former President Barack Obama is planning a 60th birthday party with hundreds of guests at his vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard this weekend, according to a person familiar with the plan.caused by the highly infectious Delta variant. Mr. Obama’s gathering will take place outdoors and will follow all local, state and federal health protocols, including a testing regime managed by a public-health professional, the person said.
James Hagerty, the town administrator in Edgartown, Mass., where the Obamas’ home is located, said he didn’t have a specific concern regarding the event, which comes during a time of year when the island is swollen with part-time residents and visitors. The board of health is monitoring and has been in touch with the president’s point of contact for mitigating Covid-19 risks, he said.
Martha’s Vineyard hasn’t recently seen issues with significant Covid-19 numbers, though the Delta variant was detected there in July. The small towns that make up the island reported 17 new positive Covid-19 tests in the past two weeks, including four cases in Edgartown, state data show.
