Banyana star lifts cup title in Belarus

Not long after swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker and surfer Bianca Buitendag delivered Team SA’s only three medals from the Tokyo Olympics, Banyana Banyana defender Lebogang Ramalepe ascended the podium in Belarus this week.

The 29-year-old from Ga-Maupa in Limpopo helped FC Dinamo Minsk to the Belarusian Women’s Cup on Friday. The gold medal from her team’s 5-0 thrashing of city rivals FC Minsk in the final is Ramalepe’s second gong after she lifted the same trophy during her debut season in the eastern European country last year.

Jumaima, as Ramalepe is known among her peers, believes her side can repeat the double victory from last season as her team is still in contention to defend its league title with nine games to go. “We are leading with six points, so I think we stand a chance to be crowned league champions again,” she said.

The elated Ramalepe said she was now looking forward to her debut in the Uefa Women’s Champions League.
