Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa’s intervention helped secure additional funding for the players and support staff ahead of their departure for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later on Wednesday.
JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association and the Banyana Banyana squad have reached an agreement over their deadlock.
Kodwa revealed that a call to the Motsepe Foundation on Tuesday night and a subsequent donation helped both parties in the negotiations to reach a settlement. The SA Football Players Union says the squad compromised on the figure they initially asked for as it was in the best interests of the nation to resolve the matter and focus on the World Cup.
Safa president Danny Jordaan said he understood the players' standpoint and that they were within their rights to boycott Sunday’s game against Botswana and to seek a better deal, adding that he hoped in future, contract negotiations would be concluded well before a big tournament.
