A resident details the unintended consequences of a condo building's smoking ban, with residents now congregating outside their building and littering cigarette butts.

A massive condo building next door banned smoking on its property two months ago. While I think it's great they banned smoking, it's become everyone else's problem. Instead of using their designated smoking area, residents now congregate on the sidewalk and in a nearby park, smoking right outside my building and leaving cigarette butts everywhere.

I pick up at least 10 per day! I too would like my building to be smoke-free because we have one resident who is a chain smoker, but seeing how this ban has impacted neighbors makes me wonder if there are better solutions. I contacted the building next door, and they seemed responsive, but when I asked an individual smoking outside our building, he claimed he was in public right of way and wouldn't modify his behavior. Secondhand smoke is bad news – beyond serious health consequences, it triggers migraines and nausea for me. Cigarette butts seep carcinogens into the soil, harming wildlife, pets, and water quality. Is there a better solution, or am I another NIMBY
