Spier Wine Estate farmer Angus McIntosh wants the use of glyphosate, the main ingredient in many weed killers, banned.

Cape Town - The herbicide is widely used by the agricultural industry on genetically modified crops, while landscapers and home gardeners also use it. Glyphosate is thought to be linked to some forms of cancer and other diseases.

Glyphosate is sprayed directly onto the crops one to two weeks before harvesting to speed up the drying process that occurs when the crops begin to die. Glyphosate is absorbed by the plant and cannot be removed by washing. In the most recent study, researchers at the University of Washington in the US found a direct link between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system.
