The number of attempts to ban books will likely set a record in 2022, as the American Library Association has already tracked 681 attempts to ban or restrict library resources through the first eight months of this year in the U.S.
published last month found at least 1,740 reviews, challenges and bans of books occurred during the 2021-22 school year in the Lone Star state. The database included more than 2,000 such attempts to remove 880 unique titles since 2018. The vast majority of the books touched on issues of race and racism or had LGBTQ+ characters. The findings showed that the wave of book reviews and removals that swept across Texas schools last year was mostly led by politicians, not parents.
"In the past, most challenges to library resources only sought to remove or restrict a single title,” ALA officials said in a statement. “ there were instances where hundreds of titles were challenged at a time and where challenges were made districtwide as opposed to at a specific school.” The Chronicle’s investigation supports that finding: Nearly two thirds of the reviews from the 2021-22 school year — 1,057 — occurred after state Rep. Matt Krause, R-Fort Worth, asked districts last fall to check their shelves for books on a list of roughly 850 titles he circulated.
