BANGKOK: Bangkok's southwestern neighbouring province of Samut Sakhon is currently imposing a heavy fine for people who might be found outdoors without a health mask on their face.
Samut Sakhon Provincial Governor Weerasak Wichitsangsri confirmed on Thursday he has imposed such legal penalty under emergency rule against the Covid-19 pandemic for those who might be found outdoors without a health mask on their face anywhere in the province, about 40km southwest of the capital.
The stringent measure, which warrants a maximum of 20,000 baht in fine, is effective from Friday until the end of this month, according to the provincial governor. Nevertheless, the period for the mandatory use of health masks in Samut Sakhon might probably be extended if the situation did not considerably improve, Weerasak said.
He said he has widely publicised the stringent measure among local villagers and visitors who might otherwise fail to comply in effort to help contain the virus spread in his province. Samut Sakhon is largely noted for fishery and seafood processing industries and employing the largest number of Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand. - Xinhua/Asian News Network
