NEW RELEASES | Banele Vakele's last Savage Year
"I want to work with Firgrove fruit. There's a story there, too. It's closest to Khayelitsha!" says Banele Vakele .
Yesterday at Meerlust, we discussed the fact that, that particular section of Stellenbosch, along the Baden Powell Road, and the banks of the Eerste River, 5km from the ocean, with a markedly cooler climate than the rest of Stellenbosch, as yet undesignated, should be either identified as Lower Eerste River, or, as Christian Eedes joked, the wine ward of Khayelitsha.
Stellenbosch really is a country on its own. An interesting proposition, to be sure, and it reminded me of Vakele's comment about Firgrove, himself a Khayelitsha resident, and given the sheer quality of the agricultural land, its proximity to the ocean, and in Firgrove, the old vines in danger of being ripped up in favour of housing developments. I want Vakele to get started sooner rather than later. South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
