Northern Ireland is expected to phase out dental amalgam under post Brexit arrangements but the BDA called for a 'Stormont brake'

Northern Ireland politicians have been urged to ban ‘toxic’ mercury tooth fillings from January 1 next year.

But the European Commission felt that was not enough to safeguard human health and the environment and voted to phase it out five years earlier than expected. NI’s Department of Health previously told us: “There is no evidence that amalgam fillings cause any harm to the health of dental patients, including children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and their babies.”Dr Graeme Munro Hall, Chief Dental Officer of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, says numerous studies have found: “Small amounts of mercury are constantly released from dental amalgam which poses a health risk, especially to the vulnerable population.

The BDA says the phase-out could lead to economic losses for dentists and warned it could also have negative effects on patients.
