Jesse Rodriguez overcomes possible broken jaw to post unanimous decision victory

Fighting in his hometown for the fourth time in his young professional career, Rodriguez controlled the action throughout to beat Mexico’s Cristian Gonzalez by unanimous decision in front of a sold-out crowd at the Boeing Center at Tech Port.With the win, Rodriguez added the vacant WBO flyweight title to his resume after claiming the WBC super flyweight crown a year ago followed by two successful title defenses.
San Antonio’s other world champions, “Jesse” James Leija, the late Robert Quiroga, Johnmichael Johnson, Mario Barrios and Joshua Franco, Rodriguez’s older brother, notched world titles in a single weight division.After the fight, Rodriguez was taken to a local hospital with a possible broken jaw after taking a punch in the sixth round.
The injury didn’t seem to slow Rodriguez, ranked No. 1 by the WBO, the latter half of the fight, but he never could land a knockout blow despite often being in position to do so. Although the issue never really was in doubt, Gonzalez, 32, rated No. 2 by the WBO, proved a worthy foe. He displayed a strong chin, absorbing blows to the body, uppercuts and strong straight lefts from the southpaw Rodriguez, who often was in position to land a punishing blow, only to seeThere were no knockdowns, but Gonzalez nearly went down from a right uppercut in the third round.
