Baldwin Wallace University is launching a national search for a new director of its renowned music theater program.
Victoria Bussert, a 2019 Cleveland Arts Prize winner, is leaving Baldwin Wallace University after 30 years leading the school's renowned music theatre program. Susan Van Vorst, Dean of the Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Performing Arts, told cleveland.com she was shocked when informed of Bussert’s decision.
“We will use this opportunity to engage those individuals – and our music theatre students, alumni and stakeholders – to shape the future of our program,” Van Vorst added in a release. “Our vision is simply this: ensure that BW’s Music Theatre program continues to stand out as an exemplary and effective training ground for students wishing to succeed as performing artists.”
“Music theater is one of America’s great artistic traditions,” added William Quillen, Oberlin’s Dean of the Conservatory of Music. “It’s also a distinctive Oberlin tradition, as evidenced by the numerous Oberlin alumni over the years — conservatory and college alike — who have helped shapeThe college counts “Chicago” composer John Kander and “The Lion King” director Julie Taymor among its alumni.
In 1995, BW hired her to lead its modest music theatre program of about 20 students. In the decades since, Bussert has transformed it into one of the most selective and rigorous in the country with an international reputation for producing future Broadway stars.
