When finished, County Road 64 will be three-laned with a center turn lane for the two-mile stretch of road between Fish River and Highway 181.

) - Drivers in the Belforest area of Baldwin County will soon see work continuing on the County Road 64 widening project after the county secured $2 million in federal funding through the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Work on the project was put on hold for several months due to lack of funding. The next phase will get underway by this summer and will consist of the relocation of all underground utilities. Right of way was secured and cleared during phase one. When finished, County Road 64 will be three-laned with a center turn lane for the two-mile stretch of road between Fish River and Highway 181.“It’s been one of the fastest growing areas of the county for quite some time and that trend is continuing today,” said Frank Lundy, Baldwin County Engineer. “There’s no sign of it slowing down, so getting this corridor for the east / west movements improved from a two lane to a multi lane road is vastly important.” Two signal lights will also be installed at the intersections of County Road 54 West and Austin / Rigsby Roads. Before any of the lights or paving can start, underground utilities must be moved. “There are seven different utilities companies. Lots of fiber and water and gas…sewer. All of that is underground. It has to be moved out of the way and that’s a fairly lengthy process,” Lundy said.It will take about 18 months from the time work begins to get all utilities moved. The work will be an inconvenience for those who live and work in the area. Y Pizza has been serving Pittsburgh-style pies for more than two years in the area. Owner Mark Bentz said he isn’t thrilled with the thought of lengthy road construction but knows the end result will be better for everyone. “Sure, it makes you a little concerned but that brings workers as well and you know, I’m in the food business and workers got to eat just like everybody else,” Bentz said. “I think the stoplights are definitely needed. I’ve seen accidents up here at this corner where this flashing yellow light is. We’ve been here about two and a half years and I’ve seen an accident there every few months.” The total cost of the widening project is $14 million, of which the county now has all but $2.5 million. Private developers are also paying their share for construction of entrances and exits to their properties, totaling about $750,000.Downtown Mobile shooting incidents leave 8 injured, 1 dead‘What planet did you come from to act like this:’ Judge scolds alleged victim and defendant over social media videosMobile police make multiple arrests in drug bust
