On Tuesday, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office reported two drownings near Destin Beach.

Lifesaving measures were performed on the couple, but were unsuccessful.Beach Safety Chief Joethan Phillips says it’s important to know your swimming ability and never underestimate the power of the waves.

“We had about twenty water rescues over the weekend up till yesterday,” Phillips said. “It was a busy weekend, there was a lot of people here visiting. And it’s the first start of summer, so it was a busy weekend for us.”But regardless of flag color, beachgoers are urged to stay vigilant. “The water was cold at first, but after a little bit of staying in there, it’s fun,” Tinley Newton, visiting from Florence, Alabama, said. “There was a little bit of a current going to the right, but other than that, it’s pretty good.”And that people should always be aware of their surroundings. “Definitely look at the people around you. You feel that tide underneath you. Today they’re flying a yellow flag, you just got to be aware of that,” Rea said. “We’re always looking out for the little ones, in this case it was adults, and it is a tragic loss for their families.” As the summer heats up and with hurricane season just days away, some beachgoers say if you can’t handle the waves, stay out of the water. “I’m not a huge swimmer out there anyway, so I don’t ever really get really far. So my precaution is just always to stay obviously as close as possible,” Merideth Tyson, visiting from Kentucky, said.“I know locally, just yesterday I heard about some things, so I try to be aware and pay attention to the flag color,” Williams said. “And like she said, we don’t go out too far. We try to stay close and be safe.” Another good tip from Phillips is to stay hydrated, and you can always text ALBEACHES at 888777 for daily surf conditions.Valedictorian with perfect attendance since kindergarten promised grandmother he’d do well in schoolBeauty influencer, 23, fatally shot during TikTok livestream at salonAlleged gang ties debated as judge detains final defendant in Sage Park shooting
