INGLEWOOD — Rams coach Sean McVay said he was leaning toward having new quarterback Baker Mayfield be active Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders, two days after the Rams claimed the former No. 1 overall draft pick on waivers from the Carolina Panthers.
Sometimes impulsive moves pay off and it did for the Rams. Mayfield connected with wide receiver Van Jefferson for the game-winning touchdown pass with 10 seconds left to give the Rams a comeback victory, 17-16, against the Raiders. The 23-yard toss down the sideline capped an eight-play, 98-yard drive that took 1:35.
The Rams’ defense stopped Derek Carr and the Raiders at the 2-minute warning, but AJ Cole dropped a 64-yard punt at the Rams’ 2. Undaunted and with no timeouts, Mayfield led the Rams downfield – with help from an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Raiders’ Jerry Tillery for knocking the ball out of the quarterback’s hands after a play.
