A council has apologised to a family after a bailiff entered their home and allegedly threatened to take their car over a £200 debt that had already been paid SteveRobson04 reports
‘I’m still shaking’: Bailiff barged in and threatened to take our car over bill we’d paid, says mother of two
A mother of two, from Enfield, north London who asked not to be identified, said she was still shaking thinking about the incident, during which the bailiff refused to leave, causing distress to her as well as her autistic daughter. The family said the bailiff refused to leave and that he was causing distress to people with disabilities. He said he would not leave until the bill had been paid, including an extra fee for his visit that took the total to almost £600, the family alleged. He also appeared to threaten to impound their Tesla car in the driveway after retrieving a wheel clamp from his van.
The debt related to a second property which they rent to an elderly man who has the majority of his council tax bill paid through housing benefit. Magistrates granted the liability order without hearing any evidence from her, and further costs of £102.50 were added to the bill.“Please accept our sincere apologies for the further actions that were taken when you had already paid us the balance of the council tax bill,” said team leader Philip Roberts.
