Bagnaia takes MotoGP series lead after Martin howler hands him German GP win

Francesco Bagnaia won the German Motorcycle Grand Prix and took over at the top of the MotoGP world championship after race-leader Jorge Martin crashed out of the lead on the penultimate lap of a dramatic race at the Sachsenring on Sunday.

The victory was Bagnaia’s fourth Grand Prix win in succession after he won in Catalunya, Mugello and Assen heading into the round in Germany, and his 24th victory for Ducati surpasses Australian great Casey Stoner’s all-time record for the Italian marque.Bagnaia passed Martin at the final corner on lap two to take the lead after qualifying in fourth place, but Martin re-took the lead five laps later and pulled a gap of over a second before his crash gifted his rival the championship lead.

“What he push in that moment, I push in the last laps. I just tried to keep the pressure on him, and in the last two to three laps I could start to see he was making some mistakes. Then when I saw he crashed I slowed down a lot, because it was very tricky, the front tyre was closing a bit.” The older Marquez, winner of his past 11 races at the twisting undulating German track, recovered from 13th on the grid and rode with a broken screen for the last eight laps after contact with Morbidelli at the first corner on lap 22.
