The new modular electromagnetic attack hardware can be fitted to drones, ground vehicles, and weapons stations.
BAE Systems has demonstrated a new system that neutralizes air defenses and disrupst use of the electromagnetic spectrum for battlespace coordination. The defense and aerospace firm claims it has demonstrated “scaled electromagnetic attack capabilities during multiple test events”.
It did so using a smaller, modular version of its high-performance hardware. This compact form factor will enable “mass electromagnetic effects from multiple platforms with differing mission capabilities.”A ‘cost-efficient’ EA systemBAE Systems’ demonstration was carried out in collaboration with the US Air Force, the company explained in a press statement. During tests, it flew a prototype system in a weapon pod aboard a test aircraft. This demonstration aircraft represented a Group 4 or Group 5 unmanned aerial vehicle , the largest categories in the U.S. Department of Defense classification system for military drones.According to BAE Systems, the successful test highlighted its “ability to rapidly prototype a small, capable EA system running proven counter-C5ISRT software, including a third-party software application.”Crucially, the new small-scale, modular system will make BAE Systems’ electromagnetic warfare capabilities more accessible for different mission profiles. The configurable EA system uses core building blocks from its high-power airborne EA weapon systems. By presenting the technology in a smaller form factor, it enables an “affordable network of distributed EA capabilities.”“We’re showing the armed services that we can scale down our high-performance EA hardware and repurpose it for smaller nodes on the network,” Rory Duddy, program director for Modular Electromagnetic Attack at BAE Systems, explained in the statement. “We’re innovating to deliver a cost-efficient mix of exquisite and affordable capabilities that work together to deliver a discriminating effect on the battlespace,” he continued. The UK’s largest defense contractorMilitary electromagnetic attack capabilities refers to an operator exploiting the electromagnetic spectrum —which includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, and visible light—to disrupt, damage, or outright destroy enemy electronic systems. On the evolving modern battlefield, these capabilities are increasingly vital in order to counter advanced drone and missile threats.BAE Systems’ new modular system is configurable for specific platforms, based on weight and power constraints, as well as specific mission requirements. According to the company, it can be fitted into a weapon pod or modified for collaborative combat aircraft , UAVS, and also ground vehicles and stations.BAE Systems is the UK’s largest defense contractor. It has faced criticism in the recent past for establishing trading relationships with countries that have known, or suspected, human rights abuses. These relationships were highlighted during an investigation by UK-based non-profit Action on Armed Violence. According to their report, as of 2024, BAE Systems had supplied weapons and military equipment to somewhere between 81 and 93 countries, meaning it had armed almost half of the world.
