Politicians who breach parliamentary workplace standards could be fined up to $10,853, according to a leaked draft of new laws.
Misbehaving politicians could be docked up to 5 per cent of their salary or suspended from federal parliament if a law creating a powerful new body charged with investigating allegations of misconduct is passed.
A majority of politicians in the House of Representatives and the Senate would need to vote to empower the standards committee, which would also be able to recommend that a politician be barred from sitting on a parliamentary committee, sanctioned or in extreme cases be suspended from parliament. Complaints that have already been made could also be investigated once the commission is up and running.that she was sexually harassed by Senator David Van could potentially fall under the body’s remit if properly investigated and adverse findings were made. Van denies the allegations and an investigation is still being conducted by Parliamentary Workplace Support Services.
The commissioner can also recommend a politician be discharged from a committee or suspended from parliament. A parliamentarian decision panel could also decide to make a public statement identifying the politician if the conduct was serious.
