Bad Bunny's new album 'Debí Tirar Más Fotos' takes listeners on a musical journey through the traditional sounds and rhythms of Puerto Rico, showcasing the island's musical heritage.
Every Bad Bunny album takes you somewhere. Un Verano Sin Ti—the album that changed everything for the 30-year-old superstar—feels like an all-day beach party off Puerto Rico's coast with Medalla beers and rum flowing. X 100pre—thanks to its surprise drop on Christmas Eve 2018—some unofficially recognize as an off-kilter Christmas album. Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana feels like a flashy jet-setting vacation through Miami, Los Angeles, and of course, Monaco, with supermodels in tow.
The star's latest effort however, his sixth studio album Debí Tirar Más Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Photos), feels like a drive up the mountains of Puerto Rico where coquis chirp and horses graze outside your car window. In other words, Debí Tirar Más Fotos feels—and sounds—like home. When Bad Bunny said he'd never make another album like the Grammy-winning Un Verano Sin Ti, he meant it. It would be too easy—and too safe—to replicate the summer classic over and over for the sake of streams and pleasing the masses. And while yes, that album has certified itself as one of the most important Spanish-language albums to come out of this millennium, it'd be an insult to the island of Puerto Rico—and Bad Bunny as an artist—to claim that UVST was the peak of the island's musical offerings. Bad Bunny, much like the island he calls home, should never be underestimated. With Debí Tirar Más Fotos, he dives deeper into the traditional sounds and rhythms of Puerto Rico—bomba, plena, salsa, and merengue—musical genres that some could argue represent Puerto Rico's musical past, have now been reimagined and reinvented thanks to Benito's golden ear. Debí Tirar Más Fotos is new and nostalgic all at the same time. All of the album's instrumentals were performed and recorded live by students from Puerto Rico's Libre de Música San Juan—with hardly anyone over the age of 20 helping shape the percussion and melodies that are the beating heart of the project
