Terry Finnerty, a private ambulance company executive, is dedicated to reviving the hobby of racing pigeons in Northeast Ohio. He raises a flock of Belgian pigeons and participates in races across the Great Lakes region, alongside a small group of enthusiasts. While the sport has dwindled in recent years, Finnerty believes it can be reintroduced to a new generation by breaking the misconception that pigeons are dirty and highlighting the fascinating history and camaraderie of the sport.
Terry Finnerty shows off some of the pigeons he keeps in the backyard of his Seven Hills home. Finnerty said he hopes to grow the hobby of racing pigeons.“I wake up at 4 in the morning, make my coffee and then I come out here,” Finnerty said, his deep voice layered over the gentle undertone of a dozen cooing pigeons.
They do it not for prize money, which Finnerty says is all but nonexistent, but for bragging rights amongst themselves. And out of fascination for birds that have served and mystified humans since ancient Greeks used them to publicize the results of the first Olympic games in 776 B.C. But how the birds do this – or even where in their bodies they carry these magnetic sensors – remains a mystery.
To entice the cocks back to the nest, Finnerty uses the time-tested temptation that has fueled the triumphs and follies of males of any species for all time – the allure of a female. Racers gather the night before a race and, weather permitting, inspect the birds and load them into a truck that drives them to the release site.
