Thousands of cans of baby formula have been recalled across 12 states due to levels of vitamin D above the maximum permitted amount, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration .The product, Perrigo's Premium Infant Formula with Iron Milk-Based Powder, was voluntarily recalled by the Michigan-headquartered company on Thursday, August 8.The recall affects three lots within one batch, or 16,500 cans.
While babies receiving only breast milk or both breast milk and infant formula need a supplement of 400 IU of vitamin D per day, babies receiving only infant formula do not need supplementation, as formulas are fortified with vitamin D.The lot codes and 'use by' dates that parents and caregivers should look for if they've purchased the recalled product can be found at the bottom of the package.
