A newborn is in critical condition after being abandoned on an East Side sidewalk in below-freezing weather, San Antonio police said.

A newborn baby was abandoned on an East Side sidewalk amid below-freezing weather. The newborn was discovered by a passerby sometime before 3 a.m. on the sidewalk near Nolan Street and Cherry Street , according to preliminary San Antonio police report. The newborn, whose gender wasn't provided, was wrapped in a towel and placed in a basket. The baby was breathing weakly and the umbilical cord was still attached, police said. The baby is in critical condition.

The location where the baby was found is near the San Antonio Fire Department's Fire Station #1, located at 515 N. Cherry Street. San Antonio police advise anyone who is unable to care for newborns to leave their baby at a designated Safe Place, as provided by the Safe Haven law. Also known as the Baby Moses law, the measure gives parents who are unable to care for their child a safe and legal choice to leave their infant with an employee at a designated safe place.
