San Antonio Zoo introduced fans to its newest and cutest little one, a baby capybara born just last week.

Timothy the hippo may have some competition for cutest resident at the San Antonio Zoo , which hadn't welcomed a baby capybara into the world for nearly 25 years. The zoo announced in a social media post Thursday that a capybara named Tupi was born Dec. 3. Tupi is the first capybara born at the zoo since 2000, according to the post. Capybaras are native to South America , where the Tupi peoples were largely wiped out by European colonization.

Rain chances set to rise this weekend across South Texas. Here’s what to expect. Zoo staff aren't sure yet whether Tupi is a male or a female. It is difficult to determine because there are no visible features to indicate a pup's sex until it reaches maturity — at anywhere from 18 months to 2 years old, according to the San Diego Zoo. What's certain, though, it that Tupi is darn cute.

How Texas' solar energy boom victimized thousands of homeowners The capybara is the largest rodent species in the world. With herds of up to 100 members, capybaras are highly social animals that love water. San Antonio Zoo visitors can see their swimming skills up close at the capybara and anteater habitat adjacent to Aussie Snacks. 'Come visit us soon and say hello to mom and baby!' the zoo said on Facebook.
