A young baby was among at least 30 people killed when a boat carrying more than 100 migrants broke apart in rough seas off Italy’s southern coast.

Rescue workers using jet skis are still searching for survivors in the choppy waters, with around 40 so far being accounted for. The Italian news agency AGI said a baby aged just a few months old and several children were among the dead. He added that it is ‘essential’ to stop sea crossings which, offering migrants the ‘illusory mirage of a better life’ in Europe, enrich traffickers and ‘cause tragedies like today’s’.Rescuers recover a body Rescuers say the death toll ‘has surpassed 30’ It was not immediately clear where the boat had set out from, but migrant vessels arriving in Calabria usually depart from Turkish or Egyptian shores.
