San Diego State's new punter/place-kicker succeeds team's MVP, but won't try to replace him
The junior from Lakeside will have a considerably higher profile this season. He is tasked with following All-America punter Matt Araiza, who also was SDSU’s kicker.
SDSU special teams coordinator Doug Deakin has made it a point of emphasis with Browning — as well as David Delgado and Collyn Hopkins, the other two punter/place-kickers on the roster — that they aren’t expected to do what Araiza did. In addition, Araiza set school records for field goals as SDSU’s place-kicker the past three seasons. And he was notable for kickoffs that more often than not reached the end zone for touchbacks.
“He’s very similar to Matt when you watch him in the winter conditioning. ... Really like what he’s done.”Some of his punts have traveled in excess of 60 yards. During pre-practice place-kicking work one day, Browning said he made a 58-yard field goal that probably would have been good from 62 yards.Performing under pressure on a Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd is something else altogether.
“Everyone sees the power and the elite consistency that Matt has on the hits of his ball,” Browning said. “That’s just phenomenal and amazing. Browning’s leg strength was developed the same place as it is for most young kickers, on a soccer field. He switched his focus to football in high school, developing as a reliable punter and kicker for West Hills.
