San Diego State struggles to slow Air Force's running game and fails to muster much offense of its own in 13-3 Mountain West loss to Falcons
San Diego State’s primary objective in Saturday night’s Mountain West game against Air Force was stopping the Falcons’ triple-option offense. That was when Air Force fullback Brad Roberts took a handoff from quarterback Haaziq Daniels and burst up the middle without an Aztec getting a hand on him.Roberts rumbled 63 yards before SDSU cornerback Dallas Branch ran him down and made a touchdown-saving tackle at the SDSU 6-yard line.
Air Force’s ball-control ground game enabled it to play keep-away from SDSU — the Falcons had the ball for nearly 40 of the game’s 60 minutes — and the Aztecs offense sputtered when it did have opportunities. And the SDSU defense was flagged twice on third-down stops during a second-quarter stretch that prevented the Aztecs from getting the offense back on the field.
The Falcons were flagged for tackling Byrd out of bounds on the play, enabling SDSU to begin its drive at the Air Force 40-yard line. SDSU looked like it was going to come right back after Air Force’s opening TD, with quarterback Jalen Mayden moving the Aztecs to the Falcons’ 31-yard line. SDSU fumbled away the opening possession of the second half, putting it on the defense again to stop the Falcons.
