Oregon center Nate Bittle looks to shoot against San Diego State forward Magoon Gwath and forward Jared Coleman-Jones during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, in Las Vegas. LAS VEGAS — Oregon coach Dana Altman watched San Diego State dismantle No. 21-ranked Creighton on Tuesday afternoon, noting that the Aztecs are always going to be elite defensively but when they’re also shooting well, they become a real problem.
The Aztecs now await the result of the Creighton-Texas A&M game to learn their Saturday assignment – either the third-place game at 4 p.m. or, if Texas A&M wins by at least 19 points, the fifth-place game at 12:30 p.m. Their opponent is most likely No. 6 Houston or a Rutgers team that has two of the nation’s top three freshmen.
As well as the Aztecs shot it , you didn’t have to look far in the box score to understand why they won’t be playing in the championship game. The Aztecs got 18 points from BJ Davis before he fouled out . Nick Boyd added 15 points and Miles Byrd had 10 on a day when the two starting bigs managed a mere five combined.
The Aztecs had things trending in the right direction as the first half wore on, with the 7-foot Bittle – who was causing them all sorts of trouble inside – on the bench with two fouls for the final six minutes. Coming out of the half’s last media timeout with 3:38 left, it was 27-27 and Wayne McKinney III was headed to the line for a 1-and-1..McKinney missed the front end of the 1-and-1.
