San Diego State plays inspired defense, but four turnovers and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty fuel 25-23 comeback victory by the Blue Raiders
SDSU players feasted at a beachside luau. They made waves at a water park. They enjoyed evening strolls on the Waikiki boardwalk.
Middle Tennessee kicker Zeke Rankin’s 37-yard field goal with 2:05 remaining gave the Blue Raiders a 25-23 win at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. Those in attendance watched the Blue Raiders convert SDSU quarterback Jalen Mayden’s third interception of the game into a go-ahead touchdown that made it 22-17 with 13:25 remaining in the fourth quarter.
SDSU had one more possession late in the game, but it ended with the fifth turnover, this one a fumble by Tyrell Shavers on a desperation lateral on a fourth-and-24 play in the final minute.The Aztecs closed out 2022 with fewer than eight victories for only the second time in 12 full seasons. The 2018 team also finished 7-6.SDSU’s special teams sparked the Aztecs with a fake punt, similar to two other occasions this season.
The SDSU defense — which forced four punts in the opening period — got the ball right back for the offense, which doubled the lead to 14-0 moments later.
