San Diego State continues one of the nation's toughest nonconference schedules with a team that nearly knocked off No. 11 Arkansas
Brian Dutcher wasn’t at a holiday party Saturday night. Eight of the other 10 Mountain West teams were in action, several against power conference opponents, one even in town , but he only stole a quick glance at a couple of them.Watching a full game tape of Troy University. And then another. And then another. That is a testament to his work ethic. That’s also a testament to his respect for the team from southeastern Alabama picked to finish 10th in the 14-school Sun Belt Conference.
The idea is to mix high-profile nonconference games that can boost your NCAA Tournament resume with easier “buy” games, where you pay someone from a low-major conference for a one-off date in your building at your convenience with Mountain West refs. And the Aztecs have been experts at this, thanks largely to scheduling guru Matt Soria.
“I mean, all these games we bought we were thinking, ‘We probably will get some wins out of them.’ We may get wins, but none of them is going to be easy.”
