San Diego State builds foundation, with 15 freshmen in '23 class; Aztecs leave some space in case more transfers become available after spring camp
The February signing period used to be like Christmas Day for college football coaches, who embraced recruiting classes like a child does a pile of presents.The early signing period and transfer portal have reduced the first Wednesday in February to a day almost like any other.San Diego State signed 18 players during December’s 72-hour signing window. In recent weeks, SDSU added three players from the NCAA transfer portal.
Sophomore Kenneth Jiles Jr., a 6-foot-5, 235-pound defensive lineman, comes to SDSU from Ohio’s Hocking Community College, where he totaled 17 tackles in nine games with three sacks and three forced fumbles.• The class includes 15 freshmen, one sophomore, five juniors and one senior. • There are players from seven states — California , Florida , Hawaii , New Mexico , Ohio and Pennsylvania and Texas .
A large majority of the freshmen are expected to redshirt during their first year on campus. For comparison, 13 of the 16 freshmen from the 2022 recruiting class redshirted last season.
