An Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash ed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, killing 38 people. The aircraft was traveling from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia , but crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan . Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the plane was damaged from outside on Russia n territory, near the city of Grozny, and practically lost control. He cited fire from the ground for serious damage to the tail section of the aircraft and apparent shrapnel holes in its fuselage.
Survivors reported hearing and feeling explosions outside the aircraft during the flight, followed by a loss of control. Aliyev expressed that while he doesn't believe the damage was intentional, he regrets that Russian authorities initially presented alternative theories for the crash. He criticized this attempt to cover up the incident. Early explanations for the crash included a collision with birds and heavy fog. Some Russian media outlets even suggested the plane may have been hit by missiles during an attack on targets in Chechnya
