An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger jet crashed in western Kazakhstan after flying far off course, resulting in the deaths of 38 people on board.

An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger jet crashed in western Kazakhstan after deviating significantly from its planned route, resulting in the deaths of 38 of the 67 people on board, according to officials. The Embraer 190 aircraft was scheduled to fly northwest from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny, a city in Chechnya, southern Russia. However, it veered across the Caspian Sea and crashed near Aktau, a city in Kazakhstan .

Flight tracking data on Flight Radar showed the plane deviating from its intended path, crossing the Caspian Sea, and then circling over the area where it eventually crashed near Aktau, a major oil and gas hub on the eastern shore of the sea. Kazakh deputy prime minister Kanat Bozumbayev stated, 'The situation is not very good, 38 dead,' according to Russia's Interfax news agency. The Kazakh emergency situations ministry reported that 29 survivors, including three children, had been hospitalized. Azerbaijan Airlines confirmed 67 people were on board - 62 passengers and five crew members. The Kazakh transport ministry said the plane carried 37 Azerbaijani nationals, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan, and 16 from Russia. The Kazakh transport ministry announced on Telegram, 'A plane on the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau. It belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines.' Azerbaijan Airlines, the country's flag carrier, stated that the plane 'made an emergency landing' approximately 3 kilometers from Aktau. The Kazakh emergency situations ministry reported that its personnel extinguished a fire that erupted upon the plane's crash. They stated that 150 emergency workers were at the crash site. Kazakhstan initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash, which remains unclear. Azerbaijan Airlines initially claimed the plane flew through a flock of birds before retracting the statement. 'We cannot disclose any investigation results at this time,' the office of Azerbaijan's prosecutor general stated in a press release
