Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the plane sustained significant damage while flying over Russia n territory near Grozny, citing ground fire as the cause. Aliyev claimed the damage was inflicted on the tail section and fuselage, causing the aircraft to lose control.
Survivors corroborated the account, reporting explosions and a subsequent loss of control. While Aliyev expressed disbelief that the damage was intentional, he criticized Russia's initial explanations for the crash, which included bird strikes and heavy fog.
