The annual Lighthouse International Film Festival on Long Beach Island will feature a documentary about Oaksterdam University’s role in the history of cannabis policy on Saturday, June 10.

American Pot Story: Oaksterdam,” which began filming in 2010 in Oakland, California, where the university is based, originally debuted last year in California. Since then been, the film has earned many accolades.

Markus has said she wants the world to see the film and how the ramifications of legalization has broadened the discussion of reform after the damage done by War on Drugs, which largely affected communities of color. “Proposition 19, the campaign featured in the documentary, was a highlight of my life and the legalization movement, so I’m incredibly excited to see the film. It will actually be my first time seeing it as well,” said Evan Nison, a participant in the film. “The fact that it will be screened in my home state, where cannabis is now legal, makes it even more special.”
