COMMENT: Awaab's Law must tackle root causes of bad housing
SO MICHAEL Gove is promising ‘Awaab’s Law’ named in honour of two-year-old Awaab Ishak, who died after a housing landlord ignored his parents’ pleas to fix dangerous mould.
They deserve more social housing, and better social housing, not simply making social landlords whipping boys. At the same time, the Conservatives have refused to outlaw ‘no fault evictions’ – despite pledging to end the practice in their 2019 general election manifesto. The hiking of rents to match the ‘local market’ , aligned with the low supply of social housing, creates a market where rents continue to spiral upwards.filling their bootsJust when people can least afford to spend more, landlords have been hovering in the cash. Some landlords will face increased mortgage rates, but most will be on fixed rates, and a good percentage of them will own the property outright and have no mortgage to pay.
