A truck crashing into a home on St. Johns Avenue in Avondale, Jacksonville, highlights the need for road safety improvements. Residents are calling for more signage and speed bumps to prevent future accidents.

Residents in the Avondale neighborhood of Jacksonville are demanding road safety improvements after a truck crash ed into a home on St. Johns Avenue early Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred around 2:00 am, left a trail of destruction, with the truck mangled, a retention wall damaged, and a utility pole snapped in half. The crash resulted in a power outage affecting 255 customers, but power was restored before 10:00 am.

Aristide Pinto, whose parents reside in the area, described the scene as surreal, likening it to an explosion. He has witnessed speeding drivers on the road for the past five years and has contacted both the city and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) seeking solutions to curb the reckless behavior. Pinto shared an email correspondence with News4JAX, revealing that an FDOT representative stated that all appropriate safety measures have already been implemented. However, Pinto and his father disagree, arguing that additional signage or speed bumps could help slow down drivers before someone is seriously injured or killed. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond. In a statement, FDOT emphasized that it continuously reviews its infrastructure to ensure roadways meet safety standards. While FDOT does not have the authority to enforce speed limits, it promotes safe driving behaviors through its Target Zero safety initiative. The agency also highlighted that human behavior plays a significant role in most roadway crashes, stressing the importance of responsible driving choices
