Nothing was more shocking than sitting in a theater and seeing the Five Years Later title card after the opening scene in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. It added a certain weight to the film, knowing that our heroes stayed with the failure of losing half of all life for half a decade, but in its wake, it has left every post-Endgame project in this area of timeline ambiguity.
Some projects like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier give clear markers of how long after the events of Avengers: Endgame they are currently within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, with over 20 MCU projects being released since that culminating Avengers film, all inhabiting a different year after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which in universe took place in 2023, it’s starting to get very confusing navigating exactly where everything fits, and it’s made even more apparent in the MCU’s latest offering — Daredevil: Born Again. Where Does ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Take Place in the MCU? Close The Netflix iteration of Daredevil ended in 2018, only a short time before Thanos snaps his fingers, succeeded in his journey of eliminating half of all life in the universe. Daredevil: Born Again's showrunner, Dario Scardapane, confirmed recently in an interview with IGN that this series takes place seven years after the events of Daredevil Season 3, placing the start of the series in 2025. Of course, after the brutal opening of the series leads to a one-year time jump, the brunt of the series is now in 2026. Before Scardapane cleared up this timeline issue, fans were making complex charts tracking what year the new series is taking place during. Matt Murdock first officially appeared in the MCU as Peter Parker's lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which takes place in the summer of 2024, a few months removed from the Blip where the Hulk brought back all the dusted people after the infamous time heist in Avengers: Endgame near the end of 2023. Wilson Fisk returned to the Marvel world in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, and subsequently in the first Marvel Spotlight series, Echo, which also both take place in late 2024, leaving Murdock's next appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law likely to occur in 2025. Now, these first few appearances of Murdock feel far more lighthearted than what fans were used to in the Netflix iteration, but that is because the character has lived a happy life fighting crime and running a law firm with his best friends, Karen Page and Foggy Nelson . Related ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Isn’t Perfect, but Charlie Cox’s Performance as Matt Murdock Definitely Is He's a devilishly good actor. Posts The opening sequence of Daredevil: Born Again was a big swing for not only the seriesbut also the MCU as a whole. It certainly set the tone for Matt Murdock's journey as he continues to integrate into the larger MCU. It does seem like Daredevil: Born Again portrays the latest events within the MCU when it comes to timeline, and it sets up an even darker version of the Devil of Hell's Kitchen to emerge not only in the series itself but in the street-level aspects of the MCU as a whole. But, retroactively making all The Defenders-related series canon to the MCU, adds to a growing connectivity issue within this shared universe — where are all the other heroes when major events happen? Yes, Fisk makes a reference to Spider-Man in Daredevil: Born Again, but if his anti-vigilante platform continues to grow it would seem very odd if the web-slinger doesn't show up in the series, which odds are he won't. Not to mention, the MCU has a new Captain America in Sam Wilson , who is looking to reform the Avengers and has just faced off with the President. Wouldn't Sam have an issue with Fisk's agenda as well? An explanation could be the fact that Captain America: Brave New World might take place in 2027, meaning the events of the movie come after the events in Daredevil: Born Again, but that just adds to the overwhelming confusion of the MCU timeline. The MCU Timeline Used To Be Easy To Follow Before the Avengers: Endgame time jump, the MCU followed the flow of time concurrent with real life, making it very easy to know where everything fits, besides period pieces like Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel, where it was made clear that these events were taking place in the past. Now, viewers need to rely on interviews with the people creating the projects , and doing math homework just to figure out where a certain series or movie fits in the timeline of the overarching MCU, and that’s just simply too much of a burden to put on a viewer. The audience shouldn't have to wait until a new movie or series hits Disney+, so they can head to the MCU Complete Timeline page on the app to see where each sequence of events fit. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Can Fix the MCU’s Timeline Problem Although it feels like a catch-all problem solver for many issues within the MCU, Avengers: Secret Wars can also solve the timeline issues because of the nature of the comics the film will be adapting. The film is to adapt both comic versions of Secret Wars, the 1984 version written by Jim Shooter and the 2015 version written by Jonathan Hickman, with the latter resulting in the multiverse being destroyed and a new rebooted reality created. A similar outcome could be a perfect way to refresh the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a more streamlined and approachable franchise for casual audiences. Joe and Anthony Russo have claimed Avengers: Secret Wars will be a new beginning for the MCU, and while this probably references ushering in the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and others into one singular universe while cleaning up the messy strands of the multiverse, this fresh start could kick off a new timeline once again reflecting the year the viewers will be in once the movie releases in 2027. With Marvel Studios sticking to a new plan of three movies and two live-action series per year, the continuity can be managed much better and indicate clear moments in time to keep the timeline in a consistent flow.Your Rating close 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Rate Now 0/10 Your comment has not been saved Daredevil: Born Again TV-MA Crime Action Superhero Thriller Adventure 5 10 17 9.8/10 Release Date March 4, 2025 Showrunner Chris Ord Directors Michael Cuesta, Aaron Moorhead, Justin Benson, Jeffrey Nachmanoff Writers Chris Ord Franchise Daredevil, Marvel Cinematic Universe Cast See All
