Hulk snarling at the camera in The Avengers 2012
The latest update about Avengers: Doomsday and the Hulk makes Spider-Man: Brand New Day all the more important for the wider MCU. Throughout the course of the MCU timeline, Spider-Man's movie roster has by and large tied in with major events for the franchise.
Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first solo Spider-Man film for the MCU, Spider-Man: Far From Home was the first film to release after Avengers: Endgame and explore its aftermath, and Spider-Man: No Way Home most recently killed off Aunt May while bringing back Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man variants. As such, it's perhaps no surprise that Brand New Day also seems to hold some major plot points and character moments for the next chapter of the MCU. Mark Ruffalo's Hulk Update Would Mean Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is The Only Confirmed Hulk Movie Appearance Between Now & Avengers: Secret Wars While speaking with Empire, Mark Ruffalo revealed that the Hulk would not be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, though the actor also stated he was open to returning in later installments so long as the character was handled right in them. Though this could well be Ruffalo providing a proverbial smoke screen of sorts for the Hulk's potential Doomsday appearance - as MCU actors have previously had to obfuscate their roles in upcoming projects - the cast size for the fifth Avengers film does mean it'd seem understandable if the Hulk didn't appear in this film, allowing its screen time to be dedicated to other Marvel protagonists instead. Perhaps more crucially, if this is indeed true, this means that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be both the first movie in 5 years to have the Hulk in it - given his last film role was in Shang-Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings - and would currently be the only movie between 2021 and the Multiverse Saga-ending 2027 Avengers: Secret Wars to have the Hulk appear within it. Not only does this mean Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be responsible for effectively one half of the Hulk's entire post-Avengers: Endgame movie story, it also means that Brand New Day is all the more of a must-watch for those who want to catch up with the character or have an understanding of his story, unless another MCU film with the Hulk in it emerges between then and now. Why The Hulk Not Appearing In Avengers: Doomsday Makes Sense Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars look set to be very different to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame on a story level - but it's also likely the 2026 and 2027 films will reflect parts of the approach taken with these earlier MCU movies, particularly because of their major success. As such, it's worth noting that Avengers: Endgame was the film that tied up the Infinity Saga by featuring a wider range of its characters, and that Avengers: Secret Wars is likely to follow suit in this regard - which would effectively mean the Hulk could be absent from Doomsday without being absent from the entirety of the Multiverse Saga's biggest releases. Though Spider-Man: Brand New Day doesn't strictly have to justify why the Hulk isn't in Avengers: Doomsday, it would also make sense if the movie sees Banner or his green goliath counterpart be incapacitated in a way that explains why they wouldn't be able to leap into action like the MCU's other main heroes - which would in turn also add an extra layer of importance to the events of Brand New Day themselves.
