James Marsden's Cyclops about to fire an optic blast in Avengers: Doomsday
The Fox era of X-Men will be back in 2026, but this time as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the Multiverse Saga. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Your Friends and Neighbors season 2, Cyclops and Psylocke actors, James Marsden, and Olivia Munn, shared about seeing Scott Summers' retrun to the big screen in Avengers: Doomsday alongside his fellow X-Men co-stars from the original films.
Cyclops, who was a big centerpiece for one of the previews that was released in 2025, as Marsden finally got to share what it was like being the signature shot of that footage. The X-Men veteran stated,"It felt really good. It was really special. It had been so long," as he last portrayed the Marvel icon in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Marsden continued, "And there’s an X-Men alum right here too , since we’d been a part of those movies. To see how enthusiastic and how waiting with bated breath everyone is to see this movie, it feels good. To have that epic shot with modern technology and special effects..." Munn, who brought Psylocke into the franchise during 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, chimed in to make friendly fun of Marsden having made the X-Men movies back in the early 2000s, saying, "Because you were in the genesis of launching this back into the world. These were so different back in 1920, right? That’s when you did the first one?" With a laugh, Marsden shared how different the experiences were from then before joining the Avengers: Doomsday cast, saying, "Actually, when I’d do a blast, when we filmed the first movie, I’d have two rolls of film that they painted red . No, but it felt good. It was a pretty cool thing to see. I watched it over and over and over again."James Marsden: My kids don’t care. I’m kidding. I’m kidding. They love what I do. They’re very proud. But they’re like,"Okay, get over yourself." Why The X-Men's Return In Avengers: Doomsday Is Resonating With So Many It's key to remember that while Fox's X-Men films may have had its rocky road towards the end of their run, those movies came during a time in Hollywood where studios were still very hesitant to invest into superhero properties. The first X-Men movie played a big role in getting the comic book film genre restarted, along Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, and Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins in 2005. With X-Men being one of the biggest Marvel properties of all time, this is an era of the mutants that have followed millions of audience members around the world for nearly two decades. Marvel Studios is not only honoring that era of X-Men through Avengers: Doomsday, but finally also giving them the treatment that was missing during the Fox franchise, including Cyclops getting a comic book accurate costume at last. It's crucial to take into account that Avengers: Doomsday is possibly the last time the world will see this iteration of X-Men, especially if they are not back for Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel Studios is currently developing a reboot for the mutants in the MCU timeline, meaning that the original actors being back for Phase 6 is likely meant to serve as their swan song.
